Fall Newsletter

Hello friends, family and supporters!

As the harvest season is upon us, and many of us have recently gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving, we would like to thank you for your ongoing support, and tell you about some of the fun things we’ve been doing this fall!

WIN at the ABSW Conference

In September, our President presented at the Association of Black Social Workers’ conference “Moving Forward: Pathways to Culturally Competent Practice with African Canadians” which took place on September 24-27 2014 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

WIN at the ABSW Conference

In a presentation titled “Black Women in Canada: the Effects of Oppression”, Ms. Pamela Henry engaged an audience that filled the room to overflowing. The reaction was overwhelming – all those who participated, including high schools students, social workers and academics, were inspired by and proud of the unique perspective on racism in Canada and the implications for personal empowerment. The experience of attending the conference was intense, informative and rewarding for the WIN members who attended.

Wellness Workshops at Nelson House

We are proud to announce that this fall also brings the start of our wellness workshop series for Nelson House staff.

WIN-Fall-Newsletter-2On Tuesday October 7th, we gathered for a workshop focused on art, self-awareness, connection and creativity. It was an opportunity for the Nelson House team to relax and connect, and WIN would like to share our gratitude for the chance to spend time working with a group of women dedicated to supporting vulnerable women in Ottawa.

Summer Newsletter

Hello Friends, Family & Supporters,

We hope this finds you well. Summer has certainly arrived with a bang! And it has kept us hopping.

Our International Visitors

In June, we welcomed Dundeen Ferguson, President of Woman Inc. (http://womanincja.org) based in Jamaica. The meeting provided us with an opportunity to continue a dialogue that was started during our visit to Jamaica in April of 2014. We are working together to develop an international platform on women’s empowerment. We had the incredible opportunity to share best practices and learning from the two organizations followed by a delicious meal.

In July, we attended a public talk by Prem Rawat at the Sony Centre in Toronto, Ontario. Speaking of change, self-awareness, and peace, Prem’s presence was profound. Prem and his organization, Words of Peace (http://www.wopg.org/en/), share the conviction that peace is a human necessity, that real peace is possible, and that it begins with each of us.

Stand Up for WIN 2.0

On Wednesday July 23rd we had another amazing night at Absolute Comedy. Our supporters came together to enjoy laughter and good company.

The night began with a competition between 5 local amateur comics, with hilarious interludes by MC Rick Currie – and then it really took off when headliner Olivia Arrington took the stage. She brought the house down, keeping everybody in absolute stitches! Thank you to all who attended.
